![]() I'll probably have to evaluate these episodes a bit more thoroughly, so buying the Jones collection is an order.Īnd just one more thing before I end this post. None of the episodes that I've seen were particularly funny nor interesting from what I remember. The characters look too fluffy and sleek for my tastes, though I do understand this was Jones' style at the time. I've never been fond of the Chuck Jones material. It's a shame that aside from a rare laserdisc set and a region 2/4 DVD with the Turner broadcast prints, the Deitch shorts cannot be found together conveniently. The only ones I recall seeing are High Stakes, Sorry Safari, The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit (the only one I ever had on any home media format), and maybe Dicky Moe. Now, what do I think of the Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones material? Well, I've always had some strange obsession to see all of the Deitch shorts. ![]() Plus the HB episodes are what I watched the most as a kid, so nostalgia is definitely a factor. Directed by the duo of William Hanna and Joe Barbera, the pair later went on to open their own studio in the late 1950s when MGM closed their animation department. That said, the Hanna Barbera era is my favorite for all the right reasons the timing's perfect, the gags are genuinely funny, the music is quite catchy, and the animation is top-notch (for the most part). MGMs signature cartoon series, Tom and Jerry brought the studio six Academy Awards. Hearing Tom screech like a real cat in those early episodes just rubs me the wrong way, but it's funny in a weird way. Some of the very early shorts, like Fine Feathered Friend and Sufferin' Cats, don't hold up as well IMHO, although they're still good. I am now finished with the 40's material and on Little Quacker, and I have forgotten how good some of these episodes are especially The Yankee Doodle Mouse, Tee for Two, Mouse in Manhattan, The Cat Concerto, and Solid Serenade. Back on Wednesday, I decided to watch everything from each of T&J's original 3 eras chronological order. Around 2007 or '08, I got sort of tired of the shorts and stopped watching them (the same thing happened to me with the Simpsons around same time, oddly enough). I used to watch the old Tom and Jerry shorts as a kid, mainly through VHS tapes or whenever Cartoon Network showed them. ![]()
